What is TMJ?
The joint that connects your mandible (lower jaw) to your skull is called the Temporomandibular joint, or TMJ. The joint is located in front of your ears on both sides of your head. It enables your jaw to open and close, enabling you to speak and chew food. TMJ dysfunction or disorder may be caused by damage to the jaw joints or the tissues around them.
Various other factors can cause dysfunction of the TMJ such as
- Bruxism (teeth clenching or grinding)
- Dislocation of the ball-and-socket joint
- TMJ arthritis
- Injury to the Temporomandibular joint
- Incorrect bite
Typical TMJ symptoms include the following
- Jaw pain
- Headaches
- Pain behind the ear or the areas surrounding it
- Uncomfortable neck or shoulders
- Difficulty in fully expanding the mouth
- Jaws that lock up as a result of the broad opening
- Jaws making a clicking or cracking noise
- Problems in chewing
- Poor teeth alignment
- Discomfort or swelling in the jaws in the morning
If you experience any of these symptoms then you could be suffering from TMJ disorder.
Diagnosis
The results of the physical examination and history are mostly used to make the diagnosis of TMD (Temporomandibular Disorder). Preauricular, masseter, or temple pain, as well as jaw movement (such as opening and closing the mouth, and chewing), are frequently linked to the symptoms of TMD.
Almost 50% of TMD patients are asymptomatic. Radiant Maxillofacial Surgical Centre and Dental Clinic, Bhayandar is armed with the latest technology to diagnose all Temporomandibular Joint disorders.
Treatment
Nonsurgical Procedures
Medications
To treat your symptoms, we may suggest one or more medications. These consist of
- Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines (NSAIDs)
- Prescription medicines, including tranquillizers.
- Antidepressants.
- Opioids.
Interdental Devices
Devices called intraoral appliances cover the teeth. They don’t alter the bite or teeth. In addition to these names, they may also go by the terms nightguards, splints, stability devices, occlusal splints, interocclusal splints, or bruxism splints.
Alternative Therapies
A non-mainstream method performed in conjunction with traditional medicine is known as a complementary treatment. Two complementary treatments that have been investigated for TMDs include acupuncture and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS).
Acupuncturists use a technique called acupuncture to stimulate particular sites on the body, most frequently by inserting tiny needles under the skin. There is not much proof that it alleviates TMDs.
TENS uses electrodes positioned on the skin and is a battery-operated gadget. Electrical impulses produced by the device could alter how pain is perceived.
Surgical Treatment
TMJ arthroscopy: Following this minimally invasive surgery, patients typically go home the same day. The procedure, which can involve fixing the TMJ disc or getting rid of a bone spur, is done by a surgeon using a little incision.
Arthrocentesis: During this minimally invasive surgery, doctors place needles in the jaw to flush the joint with sterile fluid. This procedure purges the joint of any inflammatory agents and cleans it.
Modified condylotomy: This procedure opens up the joints in the mouth to prevent the jaw from locking.
Arthrotomy or arthroplasty: Often known as open joint surgery, is a more invasive operation where the surgeon attempts to repair the joint or the disc inside it. The procedure necessitates general anaesthesia, and the patient might have to stay the night in the hospital following it.
Joint replacement: During this invasive operation, doctors use a prosthetic to replace all or a portion of the TMJ joint in order to enhance its functionality. Additionally, general anaesthesia and an overnight hospital stay are needed for this procedure.
