All teeth are composed of three distinct layers. From the outside, first is the enamel (the outer layer of the tooth, the hardest part of the body). The second layer is the dentin (the hard inner layer), followed by the pulp. If the pulp space is exposed to the outside, the tissue becomes contaminated and eventually infected. Exposure to the pulp happens in many circumstances for example when you have a large cavity or a fractured tooth. If the pulp of your tooth gets infected then it has to be treated with Root Canal Therapy.
What are the symptoms that a tooth requires RCT?
- Persistent toothache that radiates to the jaw, other teeth, or face
- Hypersensitivity to cold foods and drinks
- Pus-oozing gum bumps or pimples
- Discolored teeth (the teeth appear dark due to insufficient blood supply)
- Cracked or chipped teeth
- A swollen jaw due to a collection of pus that has not been drained
- When an infected tooth discharges pus, it can damage the bone that supports the tooth, making the tooth feel loose and likely to fall out.
What is the procedure of RCT?
Cleaning
In the ‘cleaning’ phase, the infected pulp is removed by manual or mechanical sanding. The inner dentin wall and filled with antiseptic to prevent the recurrence of infection. We can complete this process in one marathon or multiple appointments depending on tooth condition, pain tolerance, availability, etc.
However, cleaning the infected pulp and removing cavities may take time. Therefore, it is essential that the patient does not panic and wait patiently.
Filling the tooth
After cleaning, an appropriate biocompatible substance, like gutta-percha, can be used to fill the root canal. Additionally, adhesive dental cement is frequently employed to guarantee that the root canal is effectively sealed and to guard against subsequent infections in the region.
Tooth restoration
It is done with an artificial crown designed in a cast. Crowns are typically made in specialized laboratories and can be made from a variety of materials, including ceramic, metal, etc depending on your preferences and budget. Once the crown is finished, it is attached to the tooth with a permanent adhesive. Crowns are not only important from an aesthetic point of view, but they are also necessary to protect teeth from the forces of chewing.
Post-treatment care
RCTs are generally classified as minor surgical procedures. In addition to using local anesthetics (during clinic procedures), pain relievers and antibiotics may be prescribed, depending on the condition of the teeth, pain threshold, and immunity. If local anesthesia is used, the jaw will most likely be numb for 3-4 hours, after which the effects of the anesthesia may gradually wear off. Overall, an RCT can be a very smooth and peaceful process if you follow prescribed guidelines and medications, and are disciplined about your appointments.

What to eat and what not to eat?
One of the most important aspects of any dental procedure, especially root canal surgery, is what to eat and what to avoid immediately after the procedure. Food is essential for living and functioning. Without proper daily nutrition, you don’t have the energy to complete your work and can even get sick. However, what you eat must be chewed in your mouth with your teeth before it enters your digestive system.
Important points to remember
