The practice and study of preventative oral care for kids from infancy through puberty are known as Pediatric dentistry. Pediatric dentistry takes care of all facets of developing children’s oral health. Additionally, it involves providing children who are ill or impaired with special dental care. Children should see their dentist twice a year. The first appointment should be set up when a baby’s first tooth erupts or when the child is 12 months old.

Treatments for Pediatric Patients

Dental Fillings

The two most prevalent dental disorders that can affect kids of all ages are cavities and teeth. The irreversible loss of dental enamel is known as enamel erosion. Excessive exposure to acidic foods and liquids can cause tooth erosion. Permanent teeth are less susceptible to erosion than primary teeth. This is because the enamel on deciduous teeth is thinner and less hardened.

Pulp Therapy

Primary tooth caries that are left untreated can progress to the pulp and periodontal tissues, causing intense agony for the child. Pediatric pulp therapy and primary root canal are two terms used to describe pulp therapy. This procedure is used to treat, preserve, and repair a child’s decaying primary teeth. The pulp from the crown and roots is entirely removed during a pulpectomy. The tooth is then filled with a substance that the body can re-absorb. A pulpectomy precedes a root canal, but the tooth is afterwards given a crown or permanent filling. It is frequently carried out on permanent teeth.

Symptoms of an Infected Primary Tooth

Your child has an infected primary tooth if he or she complains about:

Frequent food lodgement in a tooth
Pain while chewing
Pain during the night
Pus oozing out from the tooth
Swelling around the tooth or outside the mouth

Steps for a Pulpectomy

The following steps can be used to perform a pulpectomy:

X-rays are done to examine the root canal shapes and look for indications of infection in the surrounding areas.
The affected area is numbed using a local anaesthetic.
The tooth is drilled to clean caries and also to gain an access to the pulp chamber.
All of the pulp is removed using dental tools.
The tooth is decontaminated, cleansed, and made ready for a filling.
Resorbable material is used to fill the tooth.
Most likely, a temporary crown will be placed on you before asking you to return for a permanent filling and crown.

It’s just a deciduous tooth, why not extract it? Premature tooth loss can lead to issues like difficulties with speech development and chewing, altering the position of permanent teeth by causing nearby teeth to shift into the empty area (this can lead to crooked, overcrowded teeth that are difficult to clean).

Stainless Steel Crowns

Stainless steel crowns are caps that fit over an entire tooth. They are frequently employed in pediatric dentistry to preserve infant teeth that have suffered severe decay or injury. Premature deciduous tooth loss can lead to several issues that may eventually have an impact on permanent teeth. Therefore, until they are gone naturally, deciduous teeth are shielded by stainless steel crowns.

Space Maintainers

Space maintainers are used when a child has prematurely lost a milk tooth. They help in holding the gap so that the permanent teeth can erupt properly. Without Space maintainers, other milk teeth can move into the gap and interfere with the eruption of adult teeth. These appliances help prevent a malocclusion (crooked teeth), overcrowding, and other orthodontic conditions.

Milk Tooth Extraction

Deciduous tooth extraction is the surgical removal of milk teeth. Deciduous teeth may need to be extracted if they are severely damaged by injury or decay. This procedure is commonly performed on both front and back teeth. However, molars have multiple roots, whereas anterior teeth have only one root, so extraction is more effortless.

Tooth Sealants

A tooth sealant is a thin coating that is applied to the chewing (occlusal) surfaces of the posterior teeth. It can also be applied to the lingual side (lingual side) of the front teeth. Sealants are an effective, safe, and painless way to prevent tooth decay. Sealants are usually applied to permanent teeth that have not yet decayed. In some cases, sealants can also be applied to primary teeth, but this is less common.

Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride use is associated with a lower incidence of tooth decay. Since the introduction of fluoride in tap water, tooth decay has decreased in children and adults. Fluoride can also be applied to pediatric patients at dental clinics. This treatment has been shown to reduce the incidence of tooth decay. Topical fluoride treatment is best for children ages 3 to 6 but can be used at any age. This type of fluoride has several different forms such as commercial fluoride toothpaste, professional treatments such as gels, pastes, and varnishes. Topical fluoride treatment used during professional tooth cleaning can help prevent tooth decay.
